**Under one biosphere reserve there are three distinct zones: the core area, buffer zone and transition area. The core area is the most strictly protected territory and is responsible for the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation. The buffer zone is located around the core area and is used for activities compatible with sound ecological practices that can strengthen scientific research, monitoring, training and education. The transition area is the external part of the reserve where the maximum number of activities are permitted that promote sustainable economic and human development.
