Our Park was awarded UNESCO's Man and Biosphere designation for our commitment to improving relationships between our people and the environment

The Park's Designation

In June 2015, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park was honored to receive the prestigious UNESCO status of Man and Biosphere Reserve. The reserve encompasses the entire Park as well as 21 additional municipalities.  Together, our reserve is committed to conserving, developing, and learning about nature's dynamic connection to man in order to inspire a positive future.

**Under one biosphere reserve there are three distinct zones: the core area, buffer zone and transition area.  The core area is the most strictly protected territory and is responsible for the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation. The buffer zone is located around the core area and is used for activities compatible with sound ecological practices that can strengthen scientific research, monitoring, training and education. The transition area is the external part of the reserve where the maximum number of activities are permitted that promote sustainable economic and human development.

The Park is a mosaic of villages

The Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park is made of a variety of distinct and different pieces that come together to create one unforgettable vacation.
While the diversity of the villages, attractions, forests, and mountains may surprise you, their close proximity allows visitors to see a little bit of everything in a short amount of time.
