what is unesco?

The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) was founded in November 1945. The international organization aims to build a culture of peace, to eradicate poverty, and to promote sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. To do this, the organization creates a conversation between a diverse set of cultures, people, and environments based upon a respect for commonly shared values.

With these shared values, UNESCO has increased its portfolio to a network of 195 member states and 10 associate members around the world. UNESCO has five overarching objectives that guide decisions in all UNESCO sites.

Overarching Objectives:

  1. Attaining quality education for all and lifelong learning.

  2. Mobilizing science knowledge and policy for sustainable development.

  3. Addressing emerging social and ethical challenges.

  4. Fostering cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace.

  5. Building inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication.

what is mab unesco?

Launched in 1971, UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an Intergovernmental Scientific Programme that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.

MAB combines the natural and social sciences, economics and education to improve human livelihoods and the equitable sharing of benefits, and to safeguard natural and managed ecosystems, thus promoting innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate, and environmentally sustainable.

Its World Network of Biosphere Reserves currently counts 669 sites in 120 countries all over the world, including 16 transboundary sites.

Why Is MAB UNESCO Important to The Park?

MaB UNESCO is important to the Park because our designation as a biosphere reserve supports our goal of unifying man and nature in order to protect our rich cultural and environmental resources. We agree with MaB UNESCO that life is an amazing series of connections-between people, between people and nature, between knowledge and action, across time and place. If these connections break, we put our collective quality of life at risk. If we keep them strong, we can build a future that inspires us!
